In a statement the airline says that the situation has come about due to “recent actions of suppliers and reduced passenger bookings and traffic revenue. All flights have been suspended with immediate effect and the airline is advising travellers who have booked to seek refunds via credit cards or through the appropriate travel agent.”
The Association of British Travel Agents’ (ABTA) Chief Executive Mark Tanzer said “The failure of Sky Europe has again highlighted the gaps in the current financial protection system, which will leave some customers out of pocket and stranded abroad.
“The current system only protects passengers who booked flights as part of a package holiday, and will ensure they will be brought home free of charge or rebooked onto other airlines. However, in stark contrast, the majority of customers who will have booked independent arrangements may or may not get their money back as the airline has stated that it is unable to provide refunds.”
Sky Europe provided flights from Manchester and Luton in the UK and had a fleet of six Boeing 737 aircraft.
