BA gets A318 with ‘steep approach’ capability

British Airways has received its first A318 from Airbus equipped with a ‘steep approach’ capability.

September 1: British Airways received its first A318 from Airbus equipped with a ‘steep approach’ capability enabling the aircraft to operate from city airports such as London City.

Willie Walsh, British Airways’ Chief Executive Officer, said: “The A318s were specially ordered for the twice-daily London City – JFK New York service because of their size, flexibility and ‘steep approach’ capability. It may be our smallest aircraft but it has a big role to play.” Two aircraft have been ordered fitted with the ‘steep approach’ capability.

The A318 is certified for a 5.5° approach slope compared to a normal 3° slope for standard operations. BA’s new service from London City to New York will launch on September 29 and will carry the flight numbers BA001 – 004 for the outbound and return flights each day.
