A two-day strike by pilots employed by Finnish airline Finnair has ended.
November 18: A two-day strike by pilots employed by Finnish airline Finnair has ended after a deal was brokered between the Finnish Airline Pilots’ Association (SLL) and the airline by the national conciliator Esa Lonka.
The strike began at midnight on Monday morning with the SLL saying that the airline was planning to ignore a collective bargaining agreement and added that it objected to the proposed outsourcing of pilots to Finncomm airlines, a subsidiary domestic carrier. Yahoo News says that Finnair “ordered its pilots to teach Finncomm’s pilots”.
“It’s good that we reached a compromise solution and that the strike, which was so distressing for our customers, will end,” said Anssi Komulainen from Finnair’s Human Resources. “It has been agreed that, in addition to the 5% wage reductions, we will together pursue a 13% cut in unit costs.” However, the airline has conceded that no redundancies will be implemented until October 31, 2011.
Finnair normally operates around 200 flights a day, but over the two-day strike many were cancelled, including most of the long-haul services from Helsinki.
