British Airways has taken delivery of its first Embraer 170 aircraft.
September 3: British Airways took delivery of its first Embraer 170 aircraft at the company’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
The 76-seat aircraft will enter service on September 28 and be operated by BA CityFlyer, a subsidiary of BA, between London City, Edinburgh and Amsterdam. Six Embraer 170s and five Embraer 190SRs have been ordered in a $376 million deal with options for three more. The Embraer 170 obtained its steep approach certification to operate from London City Airport in June 2007.
Known as E-jets, the new aircraft are claimed to be more fuel efficient with significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions than current similar-capacity aircraft operating out of London City. The first 98-seat Embraer 190SR will be delivered in March 2010 with the whole fleet due to be in operation by autumn 2010, replacing nine Avro RJ100s and two RJ85s.
