Boeing and Gatwick Airport have revealed details of a joint plan to develop a multi-million-pound commercial aviation maintenance hangar at the Sussex aerodrome.
The proposed facility, which is subject to local authority planning permission, will be used to support the US manufacturer’s European GoldCare customers with a tailored range of engineering, materials and maintenance services.
It will also add further engineering capability at Gatwick to support current and future airlines as the airport continues to grow its short- and long-haul services. The new facility is expected to provide more than 100 new jobs for Boeing and its suppliers in the Gatwick area.
Mike Fleming, Vice President of Fleet Services, Boeing Commercial Aviation Services remarked: “This is an important investment for us as we commit still further to our customers in the UK and right across the European region.”
Guy Stephenson, Gatwick’s Chief Commercial Officer, added: “This new partnership with Boeing will help us to ensure that we can continue to grow and support our operations – especially in the burgeoning long-haul market – as well as providing world class facilities for our airlines.”
Gatwick Airport says it will complete an environmental study before the proposed plan is brought before the Local Planning Authority. It hopes to receive approval to allow Boeing to start construction before the end of 2017, with the facility opening for operations the following year. The design and location of the hangar will be announced at a later date.
