RUSSIAN NAVY aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov (063) transited southwards through the English Channel on October 21, along with a Task Group of seven other Russian naval vessels en route to the eastern Mediterranean Sea, where its aircraft will participate in operations against ISIL and other terrorist groups in Syria.
This will be the first time the ship has been used in combat operations. During the transit, the ships were shadowed by the Royal Navy’s Type 45 destroyer HMS Duncan (D 37) and Type 23 frigate HMS Richmond (F 239) as they headed down from the Norwegian Sea.
The flotilla also included the nuclear powered Kirov Class battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy (099) and two Udaloy Class destroyers, Vice Admiral Kulakov (626) and Severomorsk (619), plus four support vessels. They had sailed from the Northern Fleet’s home port at Severomorsk on October 15, routing around northern Norway and then down through the North Sea into the Channel, following which they will continue heading south to route through the Strait of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean.
