Kemble Airport in Gloucestershire has been rebranded as Cotswolds Airport by its owner, Ronan Harvey.
September 9: Kemble Airport in Gloucestershire has been rebranded as Cotswolds Airport by its owner, Ronan Harvey. Formerly Royal Air Force Kemble, the airfield was home to the Red Arrows in the 1970s but sold off by the Ministry of Defence after becoming redundant in the 1990s.
“The Cotswolds are famous the world over and, as we are based in the heart of this fantastic region, we decided that it made good commercial sense to use the name,” explained Harvey to the Wilts & Gloucestershire Standard. “Kemble is already known the world over in aviation circles, but by calling ourselves Cotswold Airport, we hope to increase awareness of our location and the facilities we offer to the wider global public, tourist and businesses sectors.” Harvey recently won a landmark High Court legal battle against Cotswold District Council and the former North Wiltshire District Council who wanted to restrict flying.
The airport is not about to start operating charter flights, but is aiming to become a centre for general aviation and ground-based businesses, as well as building upon its airshow successes with the Air Days held in June and Battle of Britain days in September. As well as aviation, Kemble is used by Formula 1 Grand Prix teams for straight-line testing of racing cars.
