Budget airline Ryanair has announced changes to its baggage charges.
September 6: Budget airline Ryanair announced changes to its baggage charges by up to 150% from October 1, taking the cost of a second checked-in bag at the airport from £20 to £70. At the same time it is doubling the weight allowance from 15kg to 30kg. The airline says that the new policy is to “encourage passengers to travel with carry-on luggage only.”
Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “In order to persuade passengers to travel with carry-on bags only and to defray the cost of some of our fare reductions, we are increasing baggage allowances and fees. More than 70% of Ryanair passengers will be totally unaffected by these changes as they already travel with just one carry-on bag, which is free of charge.”
Meanwhile the airline has also taken delivery of its 200th Boeing 737-800 aircraft at Boeing’s factory in Seattle, Washington. Ryanair operates an all-Boeing 737NG fleet, having invested $12 billion in recent years.
