The two largest cargo operators in Japan, Japan Airlines International (JALI) and Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA), are to merge.
August 21: The two largest cargo operators in Japan, Japan Airlines International (JALI) and Nippon Cargo Airlines (NCA), are to merge. Japan Airlines, owners of JALI, says that “The (worldwide) financial crisis caused demand for air cargo transport to fall drastically and market situations to worsen. Through a major restructuring of the cargo business and by combining the strengths of the two largest cargo operators in Japan to form the biggest solitary Japanese cargo transport provider, JALI and NCA foresee being able to secure profitability and raise the value of both companies.”
JALI and NCA started code-sharing flights for the first time in March this year. It is planned that the merger will be complete by April 1, 2010. The merger will leave Japan with two major cargo companies, the other being All Nippon Airways.
