August 14: Workers for Kenya Airways have gone on strike after the airline refused their demands for pay increases ranging from 80 to 245% on basic salaries and allowances, depending on the grade. The strike has been called despite an industrial court ruling on August 11 that prohibited it.
The airline is offering pay increases of between 11 to 13% for its 3,000 workers, but this was rejected by the Aviation and Allied Workers’ Union and a strike was called, grounding many flights at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, according to the BBC.
The dispute will now be heard at the industrial court on August 17, but Kenya Airways claim to have put a contingency plan into place to maintain operations. The BBC says that leading union officials have been arrested as the strike is deemed illegal.
