Birmingham’s runway extension approved

Solihull Council’s planning committee has approved plans to extend Birmingham International Airport’s runway by 400m to cope with more long-haul flights, allowing larger aircraft and non-stop flights to the US west coast and the Far East. Objectors to the proposals had forced a delay in the decision, first considered in December.

The £120m project will extend the runway 405m (1,329ft) towards Bickenhill and Hampton-in-Arden, and is hoped to be complete by 2012 in time for the London Olympics.
