June 22: In the face of a financial crisis Air India’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Arvind Jadhav, has written to senior management requesting them to work unpaid during July.
The airline is also to examine its wage agreements, including flying allowances and productivity linked incentives, working with Management and Unions. It is targeting a reduction in employee cost to the tune of Rs.500 crore (approximately $100 million) per annum – its wages bill is currently Rs.3,000 crore a year. In justification if its action, the airline cited the recent request by British Airways to its employees to work unpaid for a period of time.
