Another Indonesia plane crash

April 17: Up to 11 people are feared dead after a light plane crash in Indonesia’s Papua province on Friday, according to the Indonesian press. A Pilatus Porter belonging to Mimika Air was reportedly en route from Ilaga to the remote highlands town of Kota Mulia when it went down at around 1300hrs local time.

The aircraft may have crashed in an inaccessible area known as a stronghold of separatist Free Papua Movement (OPM) rebels. Indonesia has one of Asia’s worst air safety records and the European Union banned all Indonesian-registered aircraft from flying over its airspace last year, acting on a report from the International Civil Aviation Organisation on safety standards.
