Stansted inquiry unlikely before August

April 15: In an open letter, the Secretary of State (SoS) for Communities and Local Government, the Rt Hon Hazel Blears MP, states that the Public Inquiry regarding the second runway at Stansted will not commence until BAA has been able to assess the implications of the Competition Commission’s report on the proposed break-up of the company’s ownership of UK airports.

BAA has indicated that it will be ready by “the middle of May,” but the SoS will ensure that there is a minimum of eight weeks notice between the formal announcement of a date and the start of the enquiry. With the Planning Inspectorate’s recommendation of an 18-month inquiry, a decision on the second runway will not be forthcoming until 2011.
