VietJetAir Expansion

LOW-COST CARRIER VietJetAir has finalised an $11.3bn deal for 100 Boeing 737 MAX 200s, the largest single commercial aircraft purchase in Vietnam’s aviation history.  In an interesting change in strategy, departing from the typical one-type model associated with LCC operations, the carrier is boosting its fleet with the latest variant of the MAX.  It becomes only the second airline – after Ryanair – to select the high-density version, which features reconfigured exit rows to enable the jet to accommodate up to 200 passengers in a single-class layout.  VietJetAir’s first MAX 200s are scheduled to arrive in 2019 and deliveries will run through until 2023.

The signing ceremony, conducted by Vietjet President and CEO Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Ray Conner, took place at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi. His Excellency Mr. Trần Đại Quang, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and U.S. President Barack Obama, witnessed the historic agreement, valued at approximately $11.3 billion. (Boeing)

VietJetAir’s President and CEO Nguyễn Thị Phương Thảo said: “VietJetAir is efficiently operating a fleet of narrowbody aeroplanes.  Our investment in a fleet of 737 MAX 200s will accommodate our strategy of growing our future international route network, including the introduction of long-haul flights.”
