Africa most dangerous place to fly

The African Civil Aviation Agency (ACAA) has admitted that its safety record is one of the worst.

November 7: News agency Associated Press reports that the African Civil Aviation Agency (ACAA) has admitted that its safety record is one of the worst, with its Director saying it has struggled to bring African states into compliance with international safety standards.

Mwangi wa Kamau, Director of the ACAA is reported as admitting that Africa’s disproportionate share of aircraft disasters is often attributed to bad equipment, poor maintenance and failure to adhere to safety standards. Africa accounts for only 3% of the world’s air traffic but nearly a fifth of air disasters. Kamau said he has witnessed poor safety practices as chief aviation accident investigator in his native Kenya and in Namibia.

The ACAA was inaugurated in 2007, bringing together 54 regional aviation authorities within the African continent.
