July 21: A Spanish man who attempted to smuggle cocaine worth £112,000 into the UK through Bristol Airport was jailed yesterday.
Francisco Perez Becerra, 39, of Seville, was found guilty of the offence at Bristol Crown Court and given a sentence of eleven years, following an investigation by officers from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
Perez Becerra, who flew into Bristol from Gambia, via Brussels, was arrested at the airport on September 8 last year after a security officer became suspicious about the weight of a pair of trainers during a baggage search. The shoes were examined and a quantity of cocaine found.
Andrew Pavlinic, Assistant Director Criminal Investigation for HMRC, said: “This prison sentence shows that regional airports like Bristol are not a soft-touch for drug smuggling.”
